Hot Outdoor Living Trend: Outdoor Kitchens
According to the HPBA (Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association), 70% of all households in the U.S. own at least a grill or smoker as of 2023. More than likely I bet you own a grill as well. How about taking that grill one step further and building you and your family the ultimate exterior grilling experience with an outdoor kitchen!
Here at Resilient we love outdoor kitchens. They are completely customizable to fit the exact needs for yourself and your family. Most outdoor kitchens are custom-built with either paver block or CMU block and stone veneer with a granite countertop and contain at minimum 1 built-in grill with access doors underneath for storage. Most outdoor kitchens we build are usually either built in a straight run or built in an L-shape or U-shape. However, as mentioned since these outdoor kitchens are completely customizable most households decide to add on to them. In addition to a built-in grill and access doors many households opt to add more appliances such as a sink, roll-out trash bins, hibachi grills, fridges, pizza ovens, ice makers/ice bins, etc. And another popular feature is to extend the outdoor kitchen to include bar seating. The options are endless!
If you are thinking about adding an outdoor kitchen to your backyard but don’t know where to start my best advice is to begin thinking about what features or appliances are important to you and your family. Are you using the kitchen strictly to grill? Would it be convenient for you to have a cold place to store drinks outside without having to use a cooler? Do you entertain family or friends a lot and need extra spacing for them to hangout? Do you see yourself storing items such as plates, napkins, or cleaning supplies outside too? All of these questions should be asked to determine which appliances/features are right for your kitchen. If you are using this space strictly to grill and nothing else maybe all you need is a short straight run with 1 built-in grill and access doors installed underneath it. If you entertain friends and family quite a bit maybe a U-shape or L-shape is best and in addition to a built-in grill you also need bar seating and a fridge and sink for people to wash their hands. Once you have an idea of what appliances you would like to see in your outdoor kitchen my best advice is to check out a website online that sells outdoor kitchen appliances such as BBQ Guys. Here you can search each appliance and check out their sizing and various feature options. Once you have the appliances picked out then it is time to consider what shape and layout would work best while also keeping in mind the area you plan to install the kitchen. If you are only planning on installing 1-2 appliances maybe a straight run is all you need, but any more appliances and maybe U- or L-shape is the way to go. Of course your local landscaper can help you with this part too.
The opportunities are endless with outdoor kitchens - as will be the memories you make enjoying them! ☺
