Firepits: Which Option is Best for Me?

Adding a firepit to your backyard is one feature you can be sure your family will love to use and enjoy. Whether you choose to install a permanent one or portable, wood-burning or natural gas, - the memories you make around the fire will be priceless! If you are thinking about getting a firepit installed in your backyard here are some decisions you need to make first to ensure you choose the best firepit option for you and your family.

The first choice you need to make is location. Where is the ideal place you can install this firepit? The location you choose may also impact whether you should go with a portable or permanent one, which is why it is important to start with. For example if you have an existing wooden/composite deck and you want to install a firepit on it the best choice may be to go with portable as it may be expensive, or not even possible, to install a permanent one there. Otherwise, a permanent firepit is best in my opinion.

Now, the next decision you need to make is whether or not you want a wood-burning firepit as opposed to a natural gas or propane-fueled pit. Portable firepits can be either wood-burning or propane-fueled and permanent firepits are generally either wood-burning or natural gas. The best way to make this determination between wood-burning or other is to decide two things: Do you enjoy the smell of a real wood-burning firepit? And/or do you mind the extra time it takes to get a wood-burning firepit lit? Starting with the smell, for some people this aroma is nostalgic. They cannot imagine lighting a firepit and not having this smell accompany the flames. But, on the other hand, some people cannot stand the smell. It may bother them, and/or they do not like the bonfire scent to linger on their clothes. If you are apart of the latter then natural gas or propane firepits are the solution for you as they do not produce the bonfire/wood-burning odor. And, as mentioned above, the other point to decide on is do you mind the extra time it takes to light (and keep lit) a wood-burning firepit. I can imagine some people may enjoy lighting a bonfire, but in my opinion the process of lighting a wood-burning firepit is infuriating. And keeping it lit is even more frustrating. The nice element of a propane or natural-gas firepit is the flames are lit in seconds with very little work needed to be done in comparison.

Now once you have made those decisions you should have a pretty good idea of what kind of firepit is best for you and your family. If portable seems to be your best choice all you have to choose now is style. Here are some places to start thinking about which style unit you would like best: Home Depot, BBQ Guys, and Amazon. If permanent seems to be your best choice my best advice is to get in touch with a local landscaper to get started on designing it.
