Is Getting New Landscaping Worth It?
Landscaping can make or break your home’s appearance. If you have ever seen a beautiful home with little to no landscaping before then you know what I mean. No matter how appealing the actual home is, if the landscaping is mediocre, or overgrown, or nonexistent it diminishes the appearance of the home. So whether you have an older home that needs a revamped landscape, or a new build home that has none at all, it’s time to give your local landscaper a call and get an estimate. Now, it’s quite possible when you get that estimate back you may be surprised if you have never landscaped a home before - landscaping is not cheap. But you obviously need the landscaping done, so what now? Is it worth it to pay this money you weren’t expecting? The answer is yes, and I will explain why.
In order to first explain why it’s worth it let’s start with some facts. According to bankrate.com, “landscaping can increase a home’s resale value by 15-20% on average.” And in this same article it is later stated that “a well-landscaped home had a 5.5-12.7% price advantage over a home with no landscaping that translates into an extra $16,500-38,100 in value on a $300,000 home.” So, although this project is likely more than you were expecting, you can feel good knowing you are spending your money wisely. But remember once you install that new landscaping it is important to maintain it well with weeding, replacing dead plants, and of course cutting the lawn. When it comes time to sell your home, according to the National Association of Landscape Professionals, “84% of respondents said that they would pay more for a home with a well-maintained landscape.”
I actually know of a real-life case study I can attest to. Back in 2020, my husband’s old company installed quite a large landscaping job for a family in Washington Twp. This project included an inground fiberglass pool, new brick paver pool decking, a new concrete driveway with brick paver ribbons, new brick paver front and side walkways, a new fence, a few new plants front and back, a new front porch, a gas fire pit, and more for about $170,000 all in. This family bought their home a couple years before they started the project for about $485,000 and after adding $170,000 in upgrades to the landscaping (and from what I remember I think about another $100,000 or so on the interior) they were able to sell the home for $940,000 about 1-2 years later! So not only did they get all of their money back on the exterior upgrades but they also made money on the sale of the home. Talk about a win-win.
Now this next part is just going to be my personal opinion so take it as you will, but if you asked me do I think getting new landscaping installed is worth it, my answer will always be yes. Sure, I may be biased owning Resilient Outdoor Living, but truly I mean it. Putting the money aside, landscaping your backyard especially with cool features like a new fire pit or swimming pool creates memories your family will enjoy for a lifetime. You will never forget the memory of your kids jumping into their new swimming pool for the first time, or watching your son or daughter take their first steps in the freshly installed sod in your front yard.
Overall, my advice is take the jump and get that new landscaping installed. Not only do you deserve it, but chances are you are not wasting your money and you are opening your family up to loads of memories. So give that local landscaper of yours a call today!
